As a vegetarian I know that I can get all the vitamins and minerals that I need from my food. I take a multi vitamin as I did when I ate meat because unless you are getting organic produce from a reliable source , I don’t feel like the food that is grown , and definitely the meat that “is grown ” is of a high enough quality. We need to supplement a little. The age old , take on vegetarians not getting enough protein is rubbish. I stopped eating meat , because, I don’t believe that factory farming is right. And almost all of the meat that you can buy on the shelf , is factory farmed. Venison is the best meat to eat as it is reared on the correct diet and is lean meat. But how many of us go out and shoot a buck ?
Over farming is the biggest cause of deforestation. Planting soya to feed to cattle is retarded and produces poor quality meat and unfortunately milk , which is still drink.
Chickens are in my opinion the worst, as they are corralled , thousands on top of each other and their life span is about 40 days.. They are minute compared to what a ” chicken ” used to look like. Chickens are fed gound up fish meal ! That is disgusting. This is science, not farming.. No care is afforded to these animals..we all know that we are over fishing the oceans, that hundreds of species have disappeared, that high levels of mercury have been found in the blue fin tuna, but we still eat it. That freaked me out the most, that all that poison and steroids, and growth hormones are going into you when you eat meat.
Making the choice to become a vegetarian is not about starving yourself, ( when last did you go to a braai, and your vegetarian friends bring out what they brought and all the meat eaters say how amazing the dish tastes and finish it all ), its about making sacrifices in your life to forward something else. In this case, the well being of our planet and the lives of other animals. We will not develop as a species if we continue to have the attitude that it is ok to kill. We are desensitized because we get our meat in neat little parcels off the shelf in the store. We did not smell the blood and the fear when those thousands of animals were herded into the slaughter house. A very small percentage of use would be able to kill another living animal if our lives depended on it. And the most important thing is, OUR LIVES DON’T DEPEND ON IT. We can and have been living without eating meat for centuries.
I like Einsteins quote best… ” Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet. “
